Before-and-after

This image is a photo illustration. Move your mouse onto and off of it to see a direct "before-and-after" comparison with the original photograph. This shows how I can compensate for less-than-ideal conditions at the time of a site visit, through the use of various digital techniques. In this instance, the biggest challenge was the direction of the sun relative to the house, shortly before sunset. This image was made in late autumn, when the sun sets in the southwest; however, the house faces north, which meant that the front of the house was illuminated not by golden sunlight, but by blue light from the clear sky. At the same time, the west elevation of the house was close to the final color I wanted, so an overall change to color balance was out of the question. Therefore, it was necessary to tediously mask individual areas of the front of the house and adjust the color and contrast to bring out the soft yellow color and simulate the effect of diffuse evening light on it. I also put in a different sky, adjusted the color and contrast of the sky to harmonize with the late-evening light, digitally "raked" the lawn, and cleaned up many other minor details.
