"Memories" 2018

I am thrilled that this quilt has won the following awards: Honorable Mention ribbon in the "WALL QUILTS: Movable Machine Quilted" category at the Spring Paducah Quilt Show, 2019; Second Place ribbon in the "Pieced, Large" category at the 2019 International Houston Quilt Festival; Second Place ribbon in the "Mixed, Large" category at Road to California Quilt Show, January 2020; and an Honorable Mention in the "Traditional Quilt" category at the Mancuso Online Quilt Festival, August 2020. I began this quilt in the summer of 2017. The seven applique blocks are designs of Yoko Saito, taken from her "138 Original Applique Designs" book. The pieced blocks are from a computer program called EQ7. All the fabrics are Japanese. I chose to use a taupe palette of colors, as the Japanese often do. I call this quilt "Memories" because many of the blocks refer to specific memories in my life. For example, I grew up on a farm in Ohio, so I included a Barn, Wheat, Acorns and Ohio Star blocks. I also refer to travels I've made as an adult in the Bear Paws and Cathedral Windows blocks. I included several flower baskets, which make me think of my mother, who had a gift for arranging flowers. The Churn Dash block (top row, second from left) is the same design that I used in the first quilt I ever made, back in 1995. The raw edge applique was done with fusible web. The deep-red lined Prairie Points alternate with smaller, brown Prairie Points. The longarm quilting was done by Patricia Hechler of Franklin, Ohio. The "incredible" (in the word of the judges) border quilting is Patricia's original design. She spent between 450 and 500 hours on the longarm quilting. The quilt was finished in November 2018.
