"Into the Sunshine" 2021

It is my great honor that this quilt has been accepted into the permanent collection of the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky. It has also won ribbons in five international quilt shows. A team effort between myself and longarmer Patricia Hechler, its first award was a First Place in the "Wall Quilts, Movable Machine Quilted" category at the Paducah AQS Show, April 2022. I began making the quilt in March 2018, then Patricia spent fifteen months on the quilting, and I finished the edge treatment in November 2021. The applique designs are by Pearl Pereira of P3 Designs. The fabrics are Oakshott, which are hand-dyed and hand-woven. The primary colors are teal and mango.

After the Paducah show, this quilt went on to win ribbons in four more major shows: Pacific International Quilt Festival, 2022, Third Place "Traditional" category; Road to California, 2023, Best Machine Frame Quilting Award; Branson AQS, 2023, First Place "Wall Quilts - Appliqued" category; Houston International Quilt Festival, 2023, First Place "Machine Quilting" category.

Patricia did a huge amount of very dense micro-quilting which, to me, gives the quilt the beautiful effect of a tapestry. This applies to both the front and the back, but is more obvious on the back. (Other than the solid-color mango fabric used on the back, all other colors are produced by the bobbin threads.)

The image below of the top-center section of the quilt highlights not only the applique, but also the intricate design of the quilting, including the top point of an overall diamond pattern that is clearly visible on the back (above image) but more subtly on the front.

The following two images show the front and back of the same area of the quilt to show the use of different-colored top and bobbin threads for varied effects.

Note that the scallops in the edge treatment have Lazy Daisies hand-embroidered with Wonderfil Dazzle threads. Then I attached piping made of the mango fabric to the teal scallops. Behind the scallops are Prairie Points in a lighter teal fabric with three rows of top stitching in 30-wt silk thread.
